I have always wanted to have a go at making jam and so today we went off to Spooners to see what we could find. We were assigned our two rows and got to work. Olivia helped for a while and was then happy to just stand and eat them. I was surprised by how soon Zach got bored of eating the strawberries and he then spent the remainder of the time pulling of Spenser's hat and putting it back on and trampling down the bushes. Thomas doesn't really like strawberries all that much or the way that they feel so he would shout out, "Mom, I found some red ones!" I just kept telling them that if he found them he should pick them, which I don't think was his plan, but he did. He is a trooper most of the time!
Ready for the field

(for his own consumption!)
Thomas finding those red, ripe strawberries
Zach taking off dad's hat
Notice how he's holding the stem so he
doesn't have to touch the mushy part
Delicious strawberries
Ready to make some jam!
When Spenser finally convinced me that we had more than enough berries we weighed in and paid for our booty. We then spent the rest of the afternoon riding around Lacey looking at all of the parks out there since I am helping to organize park days for our ward this year. At the last stop the kids got out and played for a while before we rushed home in time to watch the Hollingshead's kids while they went out to celebrate their anniversary. All in all, not a bad first day off school.

Now that is my kind of family activity! How fun. We LOVE strawberries at our house. I'll bet my kids would have loved that.
We just went strawberry picking too! I am about to make Jam right now! (well, after I've finished reading everyone's blogs of course!)
Wondering how the jam turned out? I've never done it.
