Today I felt badly that Thomas had to learn a hard lesson. It was his first cub scout pinewood derby and despite having shown zero interest in doing anything with his car he spent all night last night with Spenser designing and painting it so that it would be ready.
We had a slight conflict in schedules with a soccer game and the pinewood derby overlapping. Before heading off to soccer I dropped off his car so that it could be weighed in and raced if we didn't make it back in time. The plan was to leave the game at half time, but when we saw how many of the boys were missing Thomas decided that he wanted to stay. Needless to say we arrived at church late, his car was underweight, and he didn't get to race it. He did however, manage to pick up the prize for the most majestic car (it had a Union Jack on top!)
It was only when Thomas saw how much fun the other kids were having that he was sad he missed it. He said that he had stayed up last night and then didn't even get to do anything. I felt bad and we had the talk about how in life there are often two good things that we want to do and have to choose between. He had already made a commitment to be part of a team and I was glad that he chose to be there to help them out before going to something else that probably would have been more fun. Darn those life lessons!
